Rock Climbing Peak District
Peak District History Tour
A history of Rock Climbing told in routes.
This is a specially designed course that aims to explain how rock climbing started by following in the footsteps of Legends such as JW Putrell, Frank Elliot, Peter Harding and Colin Kirkus. The Peak District is often regarded as the birth place of Rock Climbing and by ticking off the routes in chronological order you really get a feel for the pioneer spirit these early climbers had. Along the way we will have a look at old techniques and gear to understand what it must have been like.
The tour can be completely designed around you, with a single day concentrating the climbing in one area but still looking at the whole picture. Any added days will be used to explore and climb at all the hotspots of early activity. Over 4 days we can look at the entire history going from Putrell's first steps at Wharncliffe in 1880 and covering all the major leaps forward at crags such as Burbage, Stanage, The Roaches, Froggatt and Curber.
This tour concentrates on the important steps climbing pioneers took in the early years and therefore the climbing is of a low technical standard and no prior experience is necessary. However we would advise an introductory climbing course to learn the basics before setting off. Have a look at our instruction pages to see what we offer.
